Work has begun on creating a garden in the heart of Broadmead at the New Room/John Wesley’s Chapel; the oldest Methodist building in the world dating from 1739. The chapel, which is a Grade One listed building, is the cradle of the early Methodist movement begun by John and Charles Wesley that is now an international Christian denomination of over 75 million members.

The chapel trustees are seeking to contribute towards the transformation of Broadmead that has taken place over the last few years by greening the Broadmead courtyard of the chapel and creating an 18th century style garden for visitors and shoppers to enjoy. It is hoped that this ‘urban oasis’ will not only contribute to improving the amenities in the area but also enhance Bristol’s heritage and provide a more welcoming environment; one that offers opportunities for reflection, challenge and spiritual encounter.

The chapel is open from Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and welcomes over 25,000 visitors per annum from all over the world.
