Broadmead BID

Find out more about the Broadmead BID

Jo Hawkins Profile

Jo Hawkins - Broadmead BID Manager

How long have you been with Destination Bristol and what do you do?

I've been with the company longer than I care to admit! I work for the retail management side of Destination Bristol and am responsible for the Broadmead shopping area, focusing on marketing, cleansing and safety. Broadmead has been a Business Improvement District (BID) since 2005 and I was involved with the introduction of the BID which successfully transformed the street scene in Broadmead introducing new paving, lighting and street furniture prior to the opening of Cabot Circus in 2008.

We are now half-way through our third BID term and as Broadmead BID manager I work closely with the retailers to ensure that the BID delivers effective marketing campaigns. Enhanced cleansing standards and maintenance of street furniture are also priorities for the BID team.

Do you have a typical day?

Happily, no! Constantly liaising with retailers, working with media partners to deliver seasonal advertising campaigns and ensuring that all the related admin is completed never makes for a dull day. That's what makes it such a great job though, not knowing what might crop up from one day to the next.

What's your top tip for businesses working with the Broadmead BID?

By keeping in touch with us regularly and attending our marketing meetings businesses will be able to get the most out of the BID.

What is your favourite joke?

What do you call a sleeping werewolf? An unawarewolf!

Sophie Neveu Profile

Sophie McLaughlin - Broadmead BID Project Assistant

How long have you been with Destination Bristol and what do you do?

I joined the Broadmead management team in 2006, before it became part of Destination Bristol. I started as a Project Administrator, mainly looking after the retail crime reduction initiative and updating the Broadmead website. In 2008, we merged with Destination Bristol and over time I became much more involved with the Broadmead BID. I am now Project Assistant to the Broadmead BID Manager.

Do you have a typical day?

Never. Not only our BID projects vary all the time but also one of the most important part of my role is to engage and communicate with the retailers located in the Broadmead BID area (there are nearly 300 stores), which means that I am always in and out of the office. There are other things like dealing with queries from retailers or members of the public and street management issues (like noisy buskers and many more!) We also host different events throughout the year, so one day I could be meeting Elsa from Frozen and another I could be stroking an iguana at our Mini Zoo.

What's your top tip for businesses working with the Broadmead BID?

To engage with us on a regular basis as Broadmead BID retailers can get so much from us, especially in terms of marketing and social media. Also to attend our BID marketing meetings - they’re a great way to keep up-to-date with what's happening and to be introduced to the opportunities presented by the BID.

What is your favourite Bristol activity?

I do love shopping and catching up with friends in cafés (I'm French after all!), but if I have to choose just one thing, then borrowing a dog (from the BorrowMyDoggy app) and a walk in Ashton Court is hard to beat!

Viv Kennedy Profile

Viv Kennedy - Broadmead BID Marketing Assistant

How long have you been with Destination Bristol and what do you do?

After graduating from university at the age of 47 I joined Destination Bristol in January 2015 as the oldest intern in town, working on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays to support the Broadmead BID team in their marketing activities with a focus on social media. A few months later that post was made permanent and in November 2015 I also took on a second role, working each Monday and Thursday in the marketing department.

Do you have a typical day?

No, and I am very pleased about that, I can honestly say that every day is different and that keeps life interesting. I might find myself emailing someone to ask whether they have a spare zebra in the morning and taking photos of a Zulu choir in the afternoon, signing retailers up to a mystery shopping campaign in between.

What’s your top tip for businesses working with Destination Bristol?

Tell us as much as you can, whether it’s about events or special offers. The more information you give us, the more we can tell your potential customers.

Tell us three things you like:

Mondays, theatre, and lentils
