A guide for things to do in Bristol
1. Take a walk over Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge - as striking today as it was on its completion in 1864 - there are spectacular views down the Avon Gorge that links Bristol with the sea.
2. Travel back in time and board Brunel’s ss Great Britain. Brunel's engineering masterpiece was the world's first great ocean going liner and has been lovingly restored to her former Victorian glory. New to this award-winning ship in late 2010, visitors can enjoy The Brunel Institute and a new visitor centre.
3. At-Bristol is the place to go for an interactive adventure of a lifetime. Enjoy over 30 new exhibits at this leading UK hands-on science centre and see a presenter led show below the stars in the Planetarium. Animate It! a new exhibition in conjunction with Aardman Animations launched in July 2009. New in 2011, At-Bristol will welcome, 'All About Us', a major anatomy exhibition that brings science to life.
4. Take in a West End show at The Bristol Hippodrome. The Hippodrome has an amazing line-up for 2011 with options for all visitors.
5. See Bristol's Harbourside from a nautical perspective by taking a historic harbour tour with the Bristol Ferry Boat Company or the Bristol Packet.
6. Shopping – Bristol is a shopper’s paradise! From the opening of Cabot Circus, the city’s new £500 million shopping and leisure quarter, complete with designer stores such as Harvey Nichols through to Classy Clifton and lively Whiteladies Road, filled with independent shops, galleries, boutiques and antiques for the individual and the unusual.
7. Bristol Zoo Gardens is one of the oldest Zoos in the world with over 400 exotic and endangered species waiting to be discovered. Visit the popular ‘Monkey Jungle’ and the latest exhibit ’Explorers Creek’. Now also open - a new aerial ropes course, giving visitors the chance to swing alongside some of the Zoo’s most popular inhabitants – gibbons, gorillas and lemurs. It will be the first ropes course in Europe that is accessible to children as young as five and set within a zoo. In 2011, Bristol Zoo Gardens celebrates its 175th anniversary with celebrations through the year.
8. Bristol Blue Glass - Bristol's most famous and best-loved products boasts a new visitor centre, with glass blowing demonstrations, and a museum.
9. The Old City's grand, dignified buildings surround the Corn Exchange and St Nicholas Markets, where you'll find an intriguing mix of stalls - not to mention regular street markets, including the Weekly Farmers Market and monthly Slow Food market. Near by are the Cobbled streets of the Welsh back, King Street and Queen Square with its fine Georgian buildings.
10. Bristol has many high profile events throughout the year. The skies are ablaze with colour when over 120 hot air balloons ascend over Bristol for the annual Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in August. Other annual events include the Bristol Harbour Festival and the International Festival of Kites & Air Creations.
