Bristol celebrates 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence

Jamaica 2012 is a six month programme of events starting in May. The highlight of the celebrations will be a spectacular Independence Day street party in Millennium Square on 5th August, with a big screen showing of the ‘Men’s 100m final’.

During the Independence Day street party, visitors can enjoy:

  • Caribbean & urban sound systems, food stalls and community street party
  • ‘Best jerk cook out’ competition with competitors from around Britain
  • Urban ‘Sound Clash’ at Lakota in Stokes Croft – on 4th August

Other events to celebrate will include:

  • An ‘old school’ Block Party on Campbell Street in St. Paul’s
  • Community cricket match featuring ‘top secret’ Jamaican cricket player
  • St Pauls Carnival to have an Independence Day theme
  • Throughout October ‘Black History Month’ will feature works by Jamaican artists & performers & cultural venues such as Colston Hall and Arnolfini will have Jamaican exhibitions
