Bristol celebrates 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence

Jamaica 2012 is a six month programme of events starting in May. The highlight of the celebrations will be a spectacular Independence Day street party in Millennium Square on 5th August, with a big screen showing of the ‘Men’s 100m final’.

During the Independence Day street party, visitors can enjoy:

Caribbean & urban sound systems, food stalls and community street party

‘Best jerk cook out’ competition with competitors from around Britain

Urban ‘Sound Clash’ at Lakota in Stokes Croft – on 4th August
Other events to celebrate will include:

An ‘old school’ Block Party on Campbell Street in St. Paul’s

Community cricket match featuring ‘top secret’ Jamaican cricket player

St Pauls Carnival to have an Independence Day theme

Throughout October ‘Black History Month’ will feature works by Jamaican artists & performers & cultural venues such as Colston Hall and Arnolfini will have Jamaican exhibitions
