Home > Day out with Thomas
Meet 'Thomas', 'Sir Topham Hatt, The Fat Controller' and 'The Troublesome Trucks'. Spend a day (or even two) discovering what your favourite railway characters get up to, when they're holidaying at the Avon Valley Railway. Miles from the fabled isle of Sodor, Bitton station plays host to the fun and games that Thomas and his friends play when they're not working. They'll be up to their tricks from 10:30am to 5:30pm each day, and you can be sure of lots of good, old-fashioned family fun.

Rail
The nearest National Rail station to Bitton is Keynsham. Keynsham is on the Bristol - Westbury - Weymouth line and also served by a few Cardiff Central - Portsmouth Harbour trains. All services are operated by First Great Western, and connect with inter-city trains also operated by First Great Western and Virgin Trains at Bath Spa or Bristol Temple Meads. For timetable and fares information visit National Rail Enquiries Online or telephone 08457 48 49 50.
The distance from Keynsham to Bitton on foot is 1.5 miles: simply turn right out of the station exit and follow the road until you pick up the AVR brown tourist signs. From Keynsham bus services 532 and 533, operated by South Gloucestershire Bus and Coach, run twice an hour Monday to Saturday: timetables are available on South Gloucestershire Council's website. Buses pick up from the stop immediately across the road from Keynsham station's car park entrance, and set down in Willsbridge (ask the driver for the Avon Valley Railway).
Buses 532 and 533 do not run on Sundays or Bank Holidays: on these days catch a train to Bath Spa and then a bus from Manvers Street bus station, just across the road from the railway station (see below for details of this bus service). You may also find this more convenient at certain times on weekdays and Saturdays when the train service at Keynsham can be sparse.
