Film and Events at the Watershed in April

Watershed building

April is a month of music at Watershed where the Bristol portion of the fifth annual South West Sound music conference will be held. If you’re involved in music in the South West, you can’t afford to miss this opportunity to gain invaluable advice on your career. If you’re more of a music enthusiast, there’s still plenty to get involved with: the week leading up to the conference sees performances in venues across Bristol by local up-and-coming musicians, and April’s Cinéformation focuses on music in film. Young people can get in on the action too with a special music-centred Cinékids.

On the cinematic front, the great chronicler of British life, Mike Leigh, returns with Happy-Go-Lucky, and we welcome him to Watershed on Wed 9 April for a special preview screening and Q&A. As upbeat as its title, the film is a cheerier than usual piece of social realism offering a glimpse into the world of the smart, confident Poppy and features a warmly endearing performance from rising star Sally Hawkins. An inquisitive, feisty heroine is also at the centre of Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi’s adaptation of her acclaimed autobiographical graphic novels.

Two films explore the legacy of Italy’s fascist past. Bertolucci’s classic but little-seen 1970 film The Conformist was chosen by Richard Eyre as one of his Desert Island Flicks at last year’s Encounters International Short Film Festival, where he hailed its masterful fusion of the personal and the political. The more recent My Brother Is an Only Child revisits Italy’s troubled sociopolitical history through the eyes of two rival brothers.

Cinematic provocateur Michael Haneke follows 2005’s critically acclaimed Hidden with his first English-language film, a reinvention of his 1997 Funny Games, now set on New York’s Long Island. Featuring stunning performances, this dark thriller retains the emotional intensity, visceral impact and gripping hold of the original.

Taking a more subtle but no less affecting approach, Wim Wenders has cultivated a distinctive cinematic voice over his prolific 40 year career, and we are delighted to present a BFI touring programme of his work to coincide with the re-release of Alice in the Cities. From classic road films Kings of the Road and Paris, Texas to the uniquely subjective documentaries Lightning over Water and Buena Vista Social Club, don’t miss this chance to see these works of a modern master on the big screen.
