Berkeley Castle, Britain's oldest inhabited castle has announced plans to reduce its opening hours in 2008.
Over the last few years, in common with many stately homes, visitor numbers have been dropping at Berkeley Castle. As a result, opening to visitors has been making a loss of about £100,000 a year: this is not sustainable by a charity, so the Trustees of the Berkeley Castle Charitable Trust have regretfully decided to reduce the number of days on which the castle will be fully open to the public in 2008, to about 100.
It is however anticipated that this change will not reduce the number of people who visit the castle, as more functions and events will be held, offering more varied opportunities to do so.
Although normal open days will be reduced pre booked groups of 25 or more persons will be welcome at all times throughout the year.
The revised Castle opening hours for 2008 will be:
11am - 5.30pm with last entry at 4.30pm. These times will apply on all public open days including Sundays. Special Event times may vary.
