We Can Elude Control at Spike Island

We Can Elude ControlSpike Island hosts a live audio-visual performance event examining the relationship between electronic music and new forms of contemporary arts practice. The live 90 minute showcase presents three new performances that explore the legacy of electronic music as an exploratory avant-garde frontier and language of cultural resistance. The event teams together a selection of today's pioneering electronic musicians with artists and designers for a live AV showcase.

Legendary Berlin producer Roger Semsroth famous for his clinically refined Sleeparchive project teams up with video artist Karl Kliem (Dienststelle), former collaborator with the likes of Carsten Nicolai and Ryuichi Sakamoto, for their first gallery project. Simultaneously Karl O'Connor (British Murder Boys) Birmingham's musical vanguard collaborates with Mick Harris, an ex member of Napalm Death and frontman of UK industrial project Scorn, to create a unique take on the art of electronic abstraction.

Finally Radovan Scasascia (AM/PM) the Swiss born architect presents his unique forensic approach to sound design, constructing expansive compositions from the final notes, hums and pops sampled from vinyl records. He will be performing live visuals with acclaimed graphic designers Laurent Benner and Tommi Eberwein.

The project has been commissioned by independent curator Paul Purgas working in partnership with Spike Island, and looks to critically explore the current convergence of interests between contemporary arts practice and electronic music. With musicians such as Cartsen Nicolai, Russel Haswell and Mika Vainio now performing at international art spaces including Tate Modern, White Cube and the Berlin Biennial there is a tangible repositioning of what was previously underground electronic experimentation into a wider cultural context. The event looks to unpack this cultural shift and question the role the gallery will play in this new era. A CD/Catalogue of the performances will be released on May 1st 2008.
