Helping hands needed at Bristol Zoo this summer

Volunteer at Bristol Zoo this summerAs summer draws closer and the busy season gets underway, Bristol Zoo Gardens is appealing for more volunteers to help in a variety of ways.

The Zoo is looking for willing and enthusiastic volunteers to help out in its new butterfly exhibit which is due to open soon. The new exhibit will immerse visitors in a tropical forest experience as they wander through a vibrant array of butterflies, moths and flowers.

Ideally volunteers should be interested in butterflies, moths or exotic plants and would be required to help with a variety of tasks, including talking to visitors. Opportunities will also be available to volunteer in Bugworld.

Other opportunities are also available to help in the Zoo's Activity Centre. Here, volunteers help visitors with a variety of animal-based crafts such as face painting, badge making and brass rubbing. Volunteers can also help look after the Zoo's volunteer animal collection and assist with educational outreach visits.

Bristol Zoo's volunteer services manager, Ann Lovell, said: "There are more than 200 volunteers at Bristol Zoo, taking part in a number of different activities from face painting to animal husbandry. Volunteers play an invaluable role in the day to day running of the Zoo; they really help make a visit to Bristol Zoo a great experience. We would love to hear from anyone interested in volunteering in the Activity Centre or in the new butterfly house."

Most volunteers help on the same day each week or fortnight, but the Zoo can accommodate irregular appearances. Volunteers take part in as many or few activities as they feel comfortable and as their skills and knowledge builds up.

No prior experience necessary as training will be provided for all roles.
