Bristol Zoo Gardens is this week hosting the annual conference of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA).
The four-day event, at the Zoo's Clifton Pavilion, aims to share expertise, knowledge and best practice between the British and Irish zoo community and will be attended by representatives of all the leading zoos and aquariums in Britain and Ireland.
BIAZA members will be engaging in debate about the role of zoos and aquariums in conservation and will explore themes such as how conservation success is measured and what zoos and aquariums are doing about the amphibian extinction crisis.
The event will also be attended by television presenter and interior designer Anna Ryder-Richardson who recently purchased Manor House Wild Animal Park in Tenby, South Wales, and is a new BIAZA member.
Dr Jo Gipps, Director of Bristol Zoo Gardens, said: "We are delighted to welcome delegates from across Britain and Ireland for the annual BIAZA conference. A lot of hard work has gone into creating an interesting and valuable conference and we are pleased to be hosting this important event."
BIAZA is a conservation, education and wildlife charity which acts as the principal professional zoo body representing more than 80 member organisations in Britain and Ireland as well as promoting the values of good zoos and aquariums.
BIAZA Director, Dr Miranda Stevenson, said: "The workshops, debates and lectures being held this week demonstrate the huge commitment our leading zoos make to supporting conservation through sharing knowledge, skills and experiences.
"The zoo and aquarium community know that we make a real and meaningful contribution to wildlife conservation. Our education programmes are exemplary and our standards of animal welfare have never been higher."
