Breeding is an important part of the work at Slimbridge Wetland Centre and, as in previous years, there are special opportunities during the May half term for visitors to take a behind the scenes look at the newly hatched ducklings, goslings and cygnets.
Slimbridge 'Downy Duckling' days run from Saturday 24 May to Thursday 31 July inclusive, and offer a range of special activities at no extra charge. Most popular amongst these are the tours of the Duckery, where the baby birds are hatched and hand reared. Each day it is also possible to see the Duckling Creche, and children will be able to follow a Duckling Trail around the grounds.
Ducklings, goslings and cygnets are covered in fluffy down rather than feathers, and this, together with their small size, gives them an instant 'cuddly' appeal. Children of all ages are always delighted to be able to get so close to such cute and loveable creatures. For adults there is the additional draw that some of these birds are very rare, so this is a chance to see conservation of threatened species from around the world in action. This is an interesting and stimulating day for everyone.
During the week the usual Slimbridge facilities are also on offer, including the excellent Water's Edge restaurant, and the newly opened Canoe Safari (for which an extra charge applies). Tours of the grounds run at intervals during the day, as do talks at Toad Hall, Crane School and the Flamingo House. There are additional craft activities for children.
So do put a day at the Wetland Centre in your half term diary. It will be a most rewarding and entertaining day for all the family.
