Britain, Ireland, and their offshore islands contain the richest variety of remains of ancient religions to be found anywhere in Europe. They represent a magnificent cultural resources, for poets, artists, novelists, modern spiritualities and the heritage industry as well as historians and archaeologists. Ronald Hutton, who has devoted much of his academic career to examining the way in which these monuments and artefacts are interpreted, will devote this talk to explaining how they are viewed today. He will examine evidence for pre-Christian ritual and belief in these islands, from the Old Stone Age to the conversion to Christianity. Tuesday 9 March 7pm - Talk: A Terrible Beauty – British Artists in the First World War

Dr Paul Gough examines the work of those who were made famous by the war, and those whose reputations were almost irretrievably damaged. He explores in detail the wartime lives of fifteen artists – many of whom saw active service -- who are central to the way we now visualize the War on the Western Front and on more distant battlefields in Macedonia and Gallipoli.

Award-winning author, Lindsey Davis will discuss her approach to writing historical novels in comparison to other forms of fiction. She is famous for undertaking in-depth research in order to depict life in other periods and her talk will focus on the ancient Roman Empire and Seventeenth Century Britain which provide the backdrop for her novels.
