The Nine Lives of Isambard Kingdom Brunel

Tuesday, 19th May 2009

Rag Morris Mummers present their new play celebrating the life and work of Isambard Kingdom Brunel - commemorating the 150th anniversary of the death of Britain's greatest engineer.

Step back in time to the 1800s for a unique glimpse at Brunel's achievements, from the Thames Tunnel to the Clifton Suspension Bridge via the Great Western Railway and the Great Steamships. A cast of "mummers" including Brunelzebub, the engineer's inner demon, and his personal physician Doctor Foster, down from Gloucester, use dramatic reconstructions, rhyming couplets and bad puns to re-enact nine key moments when Brunel puts his own life on the line. Rediscover the story of our hero in the very locations that inspired him.

Free performances will take place across the city on Bristol Doors Open Day, Saturday 12th September 2009:

  • 10:00 - Sion Hill Lookout, near Clifton Suspension Bridge
  • 11:30 - The Underfall Yard, Cumberland Road
  • 13:30 - Brunel's ss Great Britain performance area, Great Western Dockyard
  • 14:30 Queen Square
  • 15:30 Brunel's Old Station Passenger Shed, Temple Meads

These locations are close to Doors Open Day venues, including Clifton Suspension Bridge, Clifton Rocks Railway, The Underfall Yard, Spike Island, Bristol Old Vic and Temple Meads.

There will be one final performance on Tuesday 15th September 2009, taking place at Explore-At-Bristol at 19:00. This will be followed by a related Science Café discussion in Explore-at-Bristol at 20:00.

Rag Morris is a mixed morris dance side from Bristol, who dance in brilliantly coloured rag shirts and bells, and who on special occasions perform mummers’ plays. Their distinctive style is energetic, colourful, comic, and very rarely normal!
