Banksy returns to Bristol this summer
Friday, 12th June 2009
World-renowned graffiti artist Banksy is set to return to his hometown of Bristol to hold an official exhibition of his work, titled Banksy vs Bristol Museum.
Held in Bristol's City Museum & Art Gallery, the show will feature his famous stencil street art along with installations, animatronics, sculptures and an impressive sensory display. The exhibition was planned in secret, with only a handful of museum staff and event organisers kept in the loop, and will feature over 70 pieces of new and previously unseen art.
This is the first large-scale exhibition of Banksy's work since his display of famous pieces at a Los Angeles warehouse in 2006. This event attracted followers from across the globe, including A-list Hollywood celebrities.
The Bristol-born artist first began making headlines in the late 1980s after leaving a number of controversial stencil paintings on prominent buildings and landmarks throughout Bristol and London. Today, some of Banksy's most famous pieces still remain in Bristol, including the Mild Mild West teddy bear painting in Stoke's Croft and the Ghost Thekla drawing on the side of the floating club/bar in Bristol's harbour.
Banksy vs Bristol Museum will run from 13 June until 31 August 2009 and is free to the public. Be sure not to miss what could be the largest official public display of Banksy's work ever held.
