Shakespeare comes to Bristol's Queen Square
Thursday, 2nd July 2009
The Lord Chamberlain’s Men are proud to announce Shakespeare’s magical Summer comedy, Twelfth Night.
Originally commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I to celebrate the festival of Twelfth Night, the play has always been one of Shakespeare’s funniest and most popular comedies, with plenty of cross-dressing shenanigans, mistaken identity and deserved comeuppance all round to keep audiences of all ages enthralled.
Set in the beautiful 18th Century setting of Queen Square, the show offers the ideal opportunity for visitors to bring a rug and picnic and settle down for a feast of theatrical fun from one of Britain’s most popular outdoor touring shakespeare companies.
After being shipwrecked in the land of Illyria and believing her twin brother to be drowned, Viola disguises herself as a man and enters the employ of the lovesick Count Orsino, whose object of affection is the flighty Olivia. Olivia’s grumpy manservant Malvolio is about to be taught a lesson by the boisterous Sir Toby Belch, his gullible friend Sir Andrew Aguecheek and the jester Feste, while Viola’s twin brother Sebastian returns having in fact survived the wreck.
As Viola slowly falls in love with Orsino while still in disguise, she must fend off unwelcome attention from Olivia, re-unite with her lost brother, and somehow conceal her true identity!
The Lord Chamberlain's Men theatre company aims to revive the traditions of Shakespearian theatre and to bring to life the greatest works of drama without compromising their meaning or integrity. TLCM offer audiences a combination of tradition and innovation that is not shared by any other touring company.
The plays are performed by an all-male cast, as Shakespeare would have originally envisioned them, whilst an innovative approach to Elizabethan costume and design not only enriches the visual enjoyment of the plays, but also provides an insight into the life and work of actors in Shakespeare’s England.
