Emerald Ensemble players collaborate with local jazz piano legend Jim Blomfield, composer Richard Barnard and the Bristol University Loudspeaker Orchestra to present a unique feast of fascinating music and virtuosic performance responding to Messiaen’s 1941 masterpiece Quartet for the End of Time. Musicians and composers will explore aspects of the Quartet from different angles. This will include live performances of selected movements, piano improvisations based on live fragments, electronic sound-art using samples of Messiaen’s music, and brand new works inspired by Quartet. The concert will feature Paul Beom-Seok Kim’s Being a Family Man for live violin, electronics, video and audience, in which the audience uses cutting-edge interactive technology to shape the course of the music moment by moment.
