Watershed

A summer of entertaining, poignant and thought-provoking new cinema from around the world – plus a sprinkling of restored classics.

Before 9/11, New York's Twin Towers were a symbol of humanity’s ability to defy gravity through engineering. As if to underscore the awesome arrogance of such an achievement, in 1974 French high wire artist Philippe Petit illicitly strung a cable between the tops of the two buildings and spent 45 minutes performing on it. With humour and amazement, the utterly compelling documentary Man on Wire brings this audacious feat to life.

Errol Morris applies his signature elegant and eloquent style to the most controversial of recent subject matters, the treatment of prisoners in Abu Ghraib, in the powerful documentary Standard Operating Procedure.

The Uruguayan comedy El Baño del Papa takes the actual 1980s visit of Pope John Paul II to a small border town as a starting point to craft a witty morality tale of imagined events. From Brazil, Elite Squad is a raw, unapologetic portrait of the violence boiling in the slums of Rio de Janeiro and from Hong Kong, Mad Detective, is an inspired cop thriller. Iranian filmmaker Hana Makhmalbaf’s Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame, is a moving drama set amongst the bombed-out ruins of the giant Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan.

Shane Meadows follows This Is England with another coming-of-age tale, Somers Town, which portrays an unlikely friendship between two teenagers, one British and one Polish, and, inspired by the film, eShed has planned Shedloads Culture Swap to celebrate European cultural diversity.
Finally… do not miss the reissue of Sergio Leone's classic Spaghetti Western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
