The manor of Charlton was first mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086 and although it is said that merchant Roger Ames built Charlton House for his bride in 1630, architectural details point to a much earlier date.
Roger and Monty Saul, the creators of the world-renowned Mulberry Design Company, acquired the property in October 1996. They have since added an Orangery for private dining and meetings, 8 further bedrooms and a Spa.
The luxurious bedrooms have been individually designed to
suit personal requirements. Some are on a grand scale with sumptuous bathrooms and working fireplaces. Others offer a more intimate atmosphere.
Far from the 'look but don't touch' attitude of many country houses, Charlton now excudes an atmosphere of comfortable, informal splendour, where relaxation comes naturally.
The Restaurant at Charlton House is renowned for it's food and has received many accolades over the past 10 years. It is presided over by chef Elisha Carter. "Elisha Carter is a young chef of mercurial genius" wrote Giles Coren in The Times. Elisha uses the best available of local, seasonal and organic ingredients to create a menu that is both exciting and delicious.
Monty's Spa was introduced into the hotel in 2002, with it's
own range of products. The signature range is now used in all treatments designed to relax, de-stress, rejuvenate and contemplate.
