Swan Hotel, Wells, Somerset

A privately owned 15th century coaching inn with log fires and four poster bedrooms situated in the centre of the city opposite Wells Cathedral. Many original features have been maintained and the traditional atmosphere enhanced and complemented by attentive and professional service.

The hotel was once a major posting house and has played host to many famous people in its time. In 1497, the hotel witnessed the greeting of Dean Gunthorpe and the new Tudor King Henry VII on the Cathedral Green. Later on in 1613, the First Stewart Queen (Ann of Denmark) visited the city and in honour of this occasion, the mayor at the time, William Bull ordered a feast here. Afterwards, the Royal Lady left behind her an ornate and extremely uncomfortable wooden armchair, in which the mayors successors are to this day annually installed.

The hotel has on view today, the superb 18th century clothes worn at the Theatre Royal in Bath by the most famous of actors, the Somerset man, John Henry Breadribb, better known as Sir Henry Irving.

Whilst the building retains ambience and character that its history has dictated, it has not rested on its laurels and now offers modern amenities to ensure the comfort of
every guest.
