There are regular transatlantic flights from throughout the US into the UK. So, if you are going to London, you could fly into London Heathrow or London Gatwick, spend a few days in London, then head to South West England either by train or car before flying back either from London or from Bristol directly to New York Newark. Alternatively, you could fly return to Bristol avoiding the hassle of a large international airport.
Flights from New York Newark to Bristol International and return, are offered daily by Continental Airlines:
Depart NY Newark at 20.55; arriveBristol International at 08.55 + 1 day.
The return flight departs Bristol International at 10.30, and arrives in NY Newark at 13.25. (New York is 5 hours behind the UK).
Other alternatives include Birmingham if you are visiting the Cotswolds as an arrival or departure point, or both.

There is an excellent network of rail routes throughout the
UK, and links to the South West are no exception. If you've arrived into one of the London airports, take the railair link into central London and then the train to your chosen South West destination. London's Paddington, Euston, and Waterloo stations supply different South West England destinations so check out which station you need to travel from.
Car hire is available from all the major car rental companies both at Bristol airport and all the other UK International airports.

You may be keen to discover another part of Britain too - Wales, Ireland, Scotland. Access to South West England from and to other UK destinations is so quick and easy, so why not extend your stay to include another Britain experience. Here are a few suggestions:
1. Fly New York Newark to Bristol, stay a few days in South West England, then fly Bristol to Dublin to discover Ireland before taking a return flight back to the US from Dublin. You can fly daily from Bristol to Dublin with Ryanair and Aer Lingus, and Dublin serves a number of US destinations.
2. You can do a similar 2 center trip including Scotland by flying Bristol/Edinburgh or Glasgow with Easyjet. Either fly back to Bristol on a return ticket and then return to New York Newark from Bristol or fly directly back to the US from either Edinburgh or Glasgow.
3. Fly into one of the London airports, have a few days in London followed by a break in SW England and fly back to the US from Bristol.
4. Fly into London Gatwick, have a few days in London, then fly from Gatwick to Plymouth Devon or Newquay Cornwall before returning to Gatwick to fly back to the US. Alternatively take a hire car, and fly back from Bristol.
