Berkeley Castle

Berkeley CastleBerkeley is a small delightful village situated in the Southern Cotswolds near to the river Severn. However it may be small but it has had an interesting history. Home to 12th century Berkeley Castle, built in 1153 under the command of King Henry II, and still a magnificent castle to visit with many medieval tales to be told! Watch out for 'Joust' at the end of July - A festival of mediaeval mayhem.
What's more Berkeley was the home of Dr Edward Jenner, the pioneer of the smallpox inoculation. His home is now a museum dedicated to his life's work and well worth a visit - one of those special museums that is much more worthwhile than it may seem at first.
