Holne Chase Hotel
A former Hunting Lodge to Buckfast Abbey, Holne Chase Hotel and Restaurant, situated just inside Dartmoor National Park, has long enjoyed a reputation for friendly and generous hospitality.
It is a haven of peace in a stunning location. A long drive, lined with azaleas and rhododendrons, leads to undulating
parkland surrounded by ancient oak woodlands. The river Dart runs through the valley, with two miles of private fishing and lovely walks. The wisteria-clad house, once a hunting lodge for the abbots of Buckfast Abbey, has been a hotel since 1934, and today offers a warm welcome with excellent food. On a fine day, you can sit with an aperitif on the terrace and gaze at the view. On cooler days, sit by an open fire.
Where even the chef is home grown! 23 year old Joe Bartlett
commenced his training in the Holne Chase brigade back in 2001 as a commis pastry chef. Having also spent a spell under the tutorship of a 2 Star Michelin Chef in Bath, Joe returned to the fold and was then promoted to Head Chef.
Dartmoor born and bred, Joe is a dedicated disciple of authentic regional cuisine. His policy is to ensure that you are able to enjoy the best quality ingredients when they are at their peak. Menus are changed to reflect the seasons so guests can enjoy the simplicity, flavour and taste sensations compiled for each season.
Another feature is that the meat has travelled an average of just 6 food miles; pork, beef, lamb and game is all reared on Dartmoor farms and is delivered fresh every day. Fish has travelled an average of 25 miles from the port of Brixham. Vegetables, salads and herbs, as and when seasonally available, are principally from local, independent growers including Holwell and Holne Chase Walled Gardens. Free Range Eggs are laid at sister farm; Holwell together with sausages, bacon and pork products which are also home grown from our free range Saddleback pigs.
Slow Food West Country
Slow Food West Country was founded and launched at Holne Chase Hotel in October 2003 as part of the Devon Festival of Food & Drink; Slow Food was founded in Italy in 1986 through concern at the decline in standards in cookery, food production and the quality of life which convenience represents. At the heart of the movement is a philosophy that aims to protect and celebrate food as a reflection of diverse regional culture, skills and tradition. "The best way to discover a region is through its food..." More information on Slow Food available at www.slowfood.com
