Kingsbridge

KingsbridgeKingsbridge sits at the head of an estuary, with the pretty sailing harbour of Salcombe being at the mouth. The town is made up of two medieval towns, Kingsbridge and Dodbrooke, originally a quarter of a mile apart. In 1219 Kingsbridge was granted the right to hold a market and became the market town for a large rural area, providing many essential services like banking, courts and foundries. It still holds regular markets today and has two art galleries, a small cinema and an excellent museum. The Cookworthy Museum is set in a 17th century grammar school and is named after William Cookworthy who invented English porcelain when he discovered china clay in Cornwall. The museum tells the story of local rural life though the ages and is a must to see. KingsbridgeThe town has some interesting shops, most of which are in or off Fore Street and built on a steep hill. Popular events include the Kingsbridge Show in September and the Christmas Extravaganza in November.
