Princetown
Princetown is the highest village on Dartmoor and is the home of Dartmoor Prison since 1805, when prisoners from American War of Independence and Napoleonic Wars first jailed. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle began The Hound of the Baskervilles at The Duchy Hotel (now High Moorland Visitor Centre). Tyrwhitt Trails, named after Thomas Tyrwhitt, founder of town. Walks to nearby North and South Hessary Tars and along old railway line to King's Tor; Swelltor and Foggintor Quarries
The Dartmoor National Parks High Moorland Visitor Centre and also the Dartmoor Prison museum are situated here and both are well worth a visit. There are also 3 Pubs in the village serving delicious food and drinks, also some gift shops, a fish and chip shop and a Cafe, the village is also on the Thomas Tyrwitt route that enables the visitor to walk along the disused Railway Track.
