Lacock

Lacock AbbeyLacock is a unique village owned by the National Trust, which protects its 700 year old collection of buildings from the modern world. The centrepiece of the village is Lacock Abbey, which was founded in 1232 and contains the original medieval cloisters, chapter house and sacristy. In 1539 it was converted into a country house and became the home of William Fox Talbot, who pioneered photography there. The adjacent Fox Talbot Museum is dedicated to his photographic achievements.

In 1944 his descendants gave the abbey and village to the National Trust, securing its future unity. Today cottages Lacockand inns dating from the 15th Century create a traditional backdrop for photographers and for the filming of classics such as Pride and Prejudice, Emma, The Mayor of Casterbridge and some scenes for the Harry Potter films for which the Abbey was also a film location.
