Unlock the fascinating history of one of England's most famous prisons, from prisoner of war depot to the present day. Located in the old prison dairy close to the main entrance.
In 1805, whilst Great Britain was at war with France, Prisoners of War were held on large decommisioned ships called hulks along the south coast. Plymouth had six suchprison hulks. Facing the problem of a close proximity of a close proximity of a large number of volatile captives so close to the Royal Dockyard, an alternative location was chosen to hold them. The wild uplands of Dartmoor.
