Classic TV Productions

Bristol has played host to some of TV's most popular series through the years. Use this map put together by Bristol Film Office to explore locations that have been used for some of the most memorable. These include Doctor Who, Only Fools and Horses, The Young Ones, Casualty, Being Human, Broadchurch, Wolf Hall and the Casual Vacancy.

Peter Capaldi Doctor Who

Doctor Who - Doctor Who has a long-running connection with Bristol and its surrounding area dating back to the 1970s, with the most recent filming taking place in 2023! View Doctor Who filming locations map

Only Fools and Horses - It often comes as a surprise to many that Only Fools and Horses was filmed in Bristol, with many of the classic scenes in recognisable spots. These include Delboy falling through the bar, which took place in the cellar of what is now Loch Fyne on Welsh Back in central Bristol. There's also Batman and Robin running through the streets of Broadmead (before Cabot Circus was built) and the Market which took place in the car park at Ashton Gate Stadium. There is a special Only Fools and Horses guided tour running in Bristol. Find out more here.

The Young Ones - One of the breakthrough sitcoms on the eighties, the Young Ones helped make household names of Rik Mayall, Ade Edmondson, Alexei Sayall, Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan. Some of the iconic places are no longer in existence (such as the grim laundrette) but Temple Meads Railway station for many will always be associated with Motörhead's Ace of Spades.

Casualty - A weekly British medical drama series and also the longest-running emergency medical drama television series in the world. Casualty's exterior shots were mainly filmed in Bristol from 1986 until 2011 before moving to their current home in Cardiff.

Being Human - Supernatural drama series about three people sharing a house in Bristol and struggling to come to terms with their paranormal alter-egos. Starring Aidan Turner, Russell Tovey and Lemora Crichlow, the pilot and first two series were filmed in Bristol before the production re-located to Cardiff in 2010.

Broadchurch - An award-winning ITV drama starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman, the production chose Bristol as its production office base from which it accessed locations in Clevedon, Dorset and the wider South West. You can explore more Broadchurch locations near Bristol on North Somerset Council’s Broadchurch Trail for Clevedon, just 13 miles from Bristol.

Wolf Hall at Bristol Cathedral

Wolf Hall - The critically acclaimed adaptation of Hilary Mantel's award-winning novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, used Bristol's Bottle Yard Studios as its base from which it accessed various locations across the South West including Bristol Cathedral which was used for various scenes in the production.

The Casual Vacancy - Three part BBC One adaptation of the first novel for adults from best-selling Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.

Teachers - a British television comedy-drama series, created by Tim Loane and starring Andrew Lincoln originally shown on Channel 4. The series follows a group of secondary school teachers in their daily lives.

The White Princess - an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Philippa Gregory, this series focuses on the marriage of Princess Elizabeth of York and King Henry VII and was filmed partly at Bristol Cathedral.
