The Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival is back with another jam-packed weekend of free and ticketed concerts, dancing, jam sessions and masterclasses from 15 -18 March.  The festival will take place in Colston Hall - an iconic music venue that that has played host to all the jazz and blues heroes from Louis Armstrong and Jimi Hendrix to Ella Fitzgerald!

The programme, studded with international stars, promises to pack in as many of Bristol's own musicians as possible, including the city’s own jazz supergroup, Get the Blessing and Cult Fiction Live! which features 32 local artists under the baton of Bristol resident, William Goodchild.

Festival Marketing Manager, Suzanne Moon, reveals some of the festival’s highlights below…snap up your tickets now!

Electric Lady Big Band – 50 years of Hendrix’s masterpiece

A 16-piece ensemble featuring an all-star cast of leading jazz improvisors tackle Jimi Hendrix’s 1968 album Electric Ladyland. The whole of this pioneering album is played in sequence and features brand new arrangements by Artistic Director/Guitarist Denny Ilett inspired by the legendary Gil Evan’s reworkings of Hendrix in the 1970’s. Players include Laura Jurd and Iain Ballamy.

Get the Blessing present Bristopolis

Get The Blessing is rightly famous for it's hard-hitting and irreverent take on British jazz but this event brings their music’s cinematic qualities to the fore. For this special event, they team up with award-winning, long-time GTB and Portishead collaborator, John Minton to produce a film which examines and celebrates over a century of Bristol, captured on film by local people.

TrioHLK with Evelyn Glennie

For this unique collaboration concert and first gig on their new album tour, see pioneering Scottish ensemble Trio HLK team up with the world’s premier solo percussionist, Dame Evelyn Glennie. As featured in the Guardian's 'Unmissable Culture of 2018'.

Roberto Pla and Elpidio Alegria – Latin Percussion Masterclass

New to the festival this year is the Cuban Dance Party and for one night only Colston Hall becomes a hot, humid Havana nightclub!  The Godfather of UK Latin percussion Roberto Pla alongside the renowned Columbian, Elpidio Alegria will be presenting a masterclass in Latin and Afro-Cuban percussion techniques for intermediate and advanced players. At the top of their field for decades, these two masters have a rare empathy and communication when they play the infectious and complex rhythms of Central and South America.
