Get set for a summer of medieval merriment at the magnificent Berkeley Castle! With its fascinating history and exciting summer holiday activities, it makes a perfect family day out, just half an hour from central Bristol.

Here are six reasons why you should visit Berkeley Castle with kids this summer...

Berkeley Castle

Sensational Sundays

Sundays are set to be sensational at Berkeley Castle this summer. Celebrate Falconry and Tudor gentry on Sunday 29 July - King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn (who honeymooned at Berkeley Castle after their secret marriage) will be returning with ladies-in-waiting and noble gentlemen in tow. Be wowed by Tudor musicians and dancing in the Great Hall and a magnificent falconry display with a medieval falconer.

Charge around the Castle’s grounds, ping up and down on bouncy castles and challenge your family to an inflatable penalty shoot-out, plus lots of other 'giant' challenges for the Family fun day on Sunday 5 August

Accomplished warriors and armour makers will be imparting their 15th century battling knowledge and sharing the ancient skill of sword fighting on Sunday 12 August. Or watch a circus performance with the cavalry of the heroes, with horse tricks, funny moments and beautiful costumes all set to music on the Lower Lawns on Sunday 19 August

Fuel young imaginations

Kids can play make-believe as medieval heroines and heroes of old with have-a-go archery every Wednesday, sword-fighting displays and a period costume dressing-up area.  There are also free arts and crafts sessions, traditional outdoor games, falconry, jester fun and frolics every Tuesday and magical storytelling every Monday.

Once you’ve explored the Castle, spend the day playing in the great outdoors. There’s acres of space to discover at Berkeley Castle - follow pretty pathways and delve into woodland, gaze over glorious countryside, marvel at the beautiful gardens specialising in scent and roses, seek rare plants, shrubs and trees and be sure to check out the gorgeous Lily Pond (originally built as a swimming pool during the time of the last Earl and his American Countess).
