This week's #FoodFriday comes from Great British Bake Off contestant Briony May. The whole of Bristol was backing the home grown talent as she made it all the way to week 9. Now we find out her showstoppers in the city with no soggy bottoms in sight!

Bravas

This is my absolute favourite place to eat in Bristol. The tapas are superb! My top dish is the fried aubergines in molasses, I always order two. It is a great place for a date or dinner with friends and it has a really authentic Spanish feel about it.

The Milk Thistle

Blooming amazing cocktails! It's the kind of bar you need to know is there because there is no sign. You have to ring a doorbell to get in and it all feels very covert. The staff are great and know their stuff about cocktails! If there's nothing on the extensive menu you fancy, talk to them and they will come up with something you will love.

Bell's Diner

Lovely little place in Montpellier. The food is delicious and unusual. It would be a perfect date spot for foodies. It serves small plates so is great for sharing.

Urban Standard

When we walked past this place we thought it was a bit dark and suspicious but we were very wrong! It has a great wine list, delightful and unique dishes and is child friendly. They do a great breakfast too!

The Gloucester Old Spot

Our favourite pub in Bristol. This place was renovated 4 years ago by the lovely Amy and it is now a bustling, family friendly pub which serves fantastic food and has a great alcohol selection. They welcome dogs too so that is always a win for us. They also have a beautiful garden which is where we spend a lot of our summer.

Bakesmiths

Great brunch, great coffee, great location. Bakesmiths has its own micro-bakery and they bake fresh bread daily. The sourdough toast topped with various delicious toppings is my favourite dish on the menu. They have a fab selection of yummy cakes too served alongside awesome coffee.

About the author

After years of baking at home and cultivating her creativity and skill, Briony first came to the public’s attention as she launched onto our screens during 9 stressful weeks in the Bake Off tent on the 2018 series of The Great British Bake Off. Progressing through the competition to the semi-finals, Briony’s humour and warmth, coupled with her resilience and ingenuity saw her become a firm favourite with the audience.

Hailing from Bristol, when not creating new baking combinations in the kitchen, Briony can be found outdoors or in the gym as she loves running and after completing several 10k runs, she escalated to two half marathons and is currently training for her third!

Having studied Spanish and French at Durham University, achieving a 2:1 with a distinction in Spoken Spanish, Briony went on to travel the world before qualifying as a secondary school teacher of Spanish and French, earning her Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the University of Bristol. After teaching for six years, she is currently a stay-at-home-mum to her lovely daughter, Nora.
