St Philips arts venue Propyard is springing back to life this month, hosting the highly anticipated Van Gogh Immersive Experience as well as a new beer festival, Hopyard. Kick off Easter weekend with beers from 12 Bristol brewers along with banging beats and street food.
For #FoodFriday, Head of Programming Sam Watts takes a break from event planning to talk pizza with us.
Now just writing the title of this article I can already feel the general blood-pressure rising – nothing seems to get Bristol's food fans more riled up than this particular debate. So here it is, my personal favourite pizza spots...
No.5 Pizza Workshop
Situated on Whiteladies Road with also a very cute looking place on North Street in Southville, these guys nail sourdough pizza. As a frequent user of the delivery service, I can vouch for the consistent quality and SPEED. My go-to is No.4, pepperoni and chilli honey. Madon! I can also vouch for the flatbread Piadenas which I don't think they have anywhere else. Oh and also, who would shun a side of Nduja meatballs?!
No.4 Flour & Ash
Well, talk about a rejuvenation – from the much-loved (sadly closed due to Covid) spot down on Cheltenham Road, to their epic come-back restaurant on Whiteladies. It's almost night and day from the old place and makes you feel like you walked straight into South Beach Miami with gold, bright pink and turquoise decor. The pizza is banging and not to be missed but so are all the other treats on the menu, such as the king prawn arancini and aubergine parmigiana. It's a must-visit.
No.3 Bosco Pizzeria
Also on Whiteladies Road (maybe there needs to be some kind of pizza tour up this street?) Bosco has been around for quite some time and is always of high quality. Check the Carciofi (roast artichokes, taleggio, green olives and pecorino) or their amazing white pizzas such as the Funghi (Cremini mushrooms, porcini, mascarpone, white truffle oil and parmesan). The decor makes for a lovely date night and they are also opening a new place, Pizzucci, on Gloucester Road with 18-inch slices – I can't wait.
No.2 Pizza Bianchi
It's tough at the top – Bianchis Group is absolutely smashing it in the food scene right now with Pasta Loco, Pasta Ripiena and Bianchis. The team at Propyard use lunch meetings basically as an excuse to eat in their restaurants. Their fourth restaurant, Pizza Bianchi, up in Clifton is no exception. It's got the vibe with great classic red and white decor, big booths and faultless pizza. Plus they are so casually good at knocking out the food they are now putting on parties.

No.1 Pizzarova
These guys most recently won the crown at Bristol Life awards! Proper handmade pizzas with great and classic toppings. They say you know a good pizza from their Margherita and this may be where Pizzarova prove why they are loved by so many across the city. Serving pizzas in the Propyard courtyard this spring and summer from their Land Rover pizza oven – we are very lucky to have them, don't miss it. In the meantime, you can grab a pizza from their fun restaurants on Gloucester Road and Park Street as well as their shipping container food hub at Wapping Wharf.
