Wicked, The musical that tells the untold story of the Witches of Oz has flown back into Bristol Hippodrome for a five-week run until Sunday 25th February

Bringing a whole new perspective to ‘The Wizard of Oz’, it takes a look at the backstory of misunderstood Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and the popular Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. Looking closely at their early lives and and how their friendship was tested as they navigated the political and social upheaval of Oz.

There are many reasons why Wicked is an award-winning West End and Broadway phenomenon but the unforgettable music by Stephen Schwartz, and its ability to connect with audiences of every generation have got to be two of them. There are lots of light-hearted and funny lines alongside topics like racial and disability discrimination. It does make you ponder whether people we see as ‘Good’ and people we call ‘Wicked’ are 100% what they seem.

The staging and set design is both visually and practically brilliant. Setting the scene of the technicolour world of Oz which becomes an extra character of the show, it’s so clever and compelling. Along with the Steampunk inspired costumes, which were some of my most favourite theatrical costumes of any show I’ve seen.

Laura Pick as Elphaba shines (and not just because she is green!). Her stage presence is mesmerising and that voice! I was close to tears during the show’s stow stopping ‘Defying Gravity’. Sarah O’Connor was also just perfection. Her bubbly blonde Glinda was the perfect opposite to Pick’s Elphaba and together they really bring soul and heart to this production.

The whole cast deserved the standing ovation they received. You’re in for a real treat if you go along.

Spectacular from start to finish, Wicked is the one of the most well-loved musicals of our time for a reason. The current cast really light up the stage and bring a fresh, new magic alongside the incredible songs and compelling storyline. You’ll be so spellbound that will leave you wanting to watch it again and again!

Wicked is at Bristol Hippodrome until 25th February. More seats have now been released priced £60.00 and under across the run, including for February Half Term. Age guidance: 7+
