With details of the International Passenger Survey recently published, we’re looking at Bristol’s international market and the changes over the last few years.

In 2017, Bristol jumped from 8th to 7th in the most popular destination by inbound visitors. Bristol has been in the top 10 destinations for the last 20 years, but it has been 10 years since we occupied the 7th spot. In that 20 years, international visitors have doubled from an estimated 300,000 to 598,000 staying trips, with a peak of 602,000 in 2017.

While the number of overall trips dropped by 0.7% between 2017 and 2018, length of stay went up as did overall spend. Ultimately, visitors are staying longer and spending more, so the economic impact of international visitors has grown substantially.

As figures include those travelling to visit friends and relatives, for business and other activities, we are thrilled that holiday visitors appear to be at their highest ever level.
