Internships

The Bristol Supported Internships

The Bristol Supported Internships are a range of programs run in partnership by Sixteen Cooperative Limited, City of Bristol College and Bristol City Council. They are full time, yearlong programmes which aim to help young people (aged 18-24) with learning difficulties and /or autism to find work by learning real work skills, on work placements with real employers. Their success rate is 70% of students going into employment.

Each work placement last around 10-12 weeks. Having longer term placements allows the interns to develop more skills and build confidence in the work place, whilst letting them become a valuable member of the team for the employer.

When potential placements are identified, internship staff visit the employer to learn more about the workplace and tasks, so that a suitable intern can be matched to the role. The interns have intensive support from a job coach at the start of their placements and on-going regular visits 2-3 times a week.

Benefits to employers hosting placements:

-    Increasing the diversity in their workforce
-    Development of mentoring skills within existing staff
-    Easing workload strains
-    A placement can act as a ‘work trial’ for an employer, which can reduce recruitment costs
-    Adding a fresh perspective to the work force

If you are interested in hosting a placement for one of their interns, or would like to find out more, please contact Hannah Wood at hannah@sixteencoop.co.uk
