A feast of polenta on the table - the food-lover’s event of the year comes to Bristol’s Better Food

12th October 2017

Categories: Latest News

Rural Italy comes to Bristol this November, as Better Food plays host to a farming family from the Abruzzo region. The organic food retailer will stage a traditional celebration that sees dinner guests dispense with plates and formality, and eat their food straight from the table.

On Friday 10th November, Better Food’s founder Phil Haughton will be joined at their Wapping Wharf store by the Ferrante family to introduce Bristolians to the spectacle of ‘polenta sulla spianatora’ – a peasant tradition of serving polenta directly on the table in one enormous shared platter. Better Food’s chefs will be cooking up a storm with the assistance of their Italian guests, plying the table with a generous layer of hearty polenta – an Italian cornmeal staple - and a rich tomato sauce, then loading the base with ethically sourced meat and vegetables, cooked in the traditional style of the region.

The Ferrante family – Ercolino and Filomena, their son Elio and wife Sonia, grandchildren Lorenzo and Ludovica, and great grandmother Teresa – will all be making the trip from their home town of Penne to Bristol with a very special delivery in tow. They’ll be bringing a consignment of their own olive oil and tomato passata to sell in Better Food’s stores, all made from ingredients grown on their organically certified farm in the Abruzzo region and specially selected by Phil on a recent scouting trip to Southern Italy. Phil selected the products for their exceptional flavour, the likes of which he says is seldom found in the UK:

“Fresh virgin olive oil isn’t like the oil we’re used to. It’s peppery, full of zing and delicious. The passata is made from tomatoes grown using traditional farming practices in the blazing southern sunshine, and you can taste that sunshine in every mouthful. A rare treat for us in the UK.”

The products will be officially launched at the harbourside event, and delivered quite literally from field to plate for guests to enjoy, whilst getting the opportunity to talk to Phil and the family about how the products were grown and sourced.

Tickets for Tutti a tavola! A feast of polenta on the table are available for £20 plus booking fee from ‎and include a place at the banquet plus a glass of sparkling Italian wine.
