Bristol Farmer’s Market to undergo a refresh

16th May 2017

Categories: Latest News

New life is being breathed into one of the UK’s longest running farmers’ markets in a bid to attract new customers and to ensure it’s longevity.

The market, which has taken place every Wednesday since 1998, has dwindled in recent years.  Bristol City Council are working with Love Food Festival to help reinstate it as a highlight of Bristol’s weekly calendar; where people come to shop, socialise and meet the people who make and grow their food.

The market will relaunch on 7th June, with the new name of Bristol Farmers’ and Producers’ Market, to reflect the diverse produce that will be on offer. New traders have already been recruited and there is room for more. The selection criteria have been adjusted to take taste and quality into consideration, as well as provenance and sustainability.

New opening hours will be from 8am until 2.30pm, giving customers plenty of opportunity to stock up before work or during their lunch break. Alongside the wonderful fishmongers, butchers, greengrocers and cheese mongers will be local producers selling breakfast pastries for commuters on their way to work, freshly made pasta and sauces and other locally made nutritious convenience foods, catering for busy lives.

There will be plenty of entertainment too, with live music and food demonstrations from Bristol food hero Barny Haughton on the first Wednesday of every month, as well as children’s activities during the summer holidays.

Commenting, Eric Dougall, Markets and Estate Service Operations Manager said: “It’s great to have Love Food involved in re-invigorating the Farmers’ Market. We’re looking forward to making Wednesday’s here at St Nicks even more of a treat for food lovers by providing a unique and inspirational food and produce shopping experience. “

Lorna Knapman, director at Love Food said: “We are delighted to be given this opportunity to breathe new life into the market. Markets are an opportunity to come together, meet, shop, interact and support the local economy. This is a market for the whole of Bristol and it’s crucial that it survives.”

Bristol Farmers’ and Producers’ market will take place on Corn St and Wine Street every Wednesday. If you are interested in running a stall at the market, please fill out an application form here.

The Street Food Market will be moving to Tuesdays as from the 16th May 2017 to provide space for both the Bristol Farmers’ and Producers’ Market and the Street Food Market to thrive.
