Slapstick 2018 Gala Lineup Revealed!

7th September 2017

Categories: Latest News

Today we’re thrilled and delighted to be able to reveal news about January's 2018 Slapstick Gala, which will be featuring an incredible triple-bill of laugh-out-loud comedy classics, all accompanied by world class live musical accompaniment.

The 2018 Gala feature screening will be Buster Keaton's 1924 classic Sherlock Jr, which recently polled at an impressive no. 18 in the BBC's poll of 100 Greatest Film Comedies Of All Time! Even though we'd have probably put it higher in our own list, we still consider it (and the even higher placings of Chaplin's Modern Times and The Great Dictator) a huge vindication of our continuing work to bring these timeless, boundary crossing comedies to a larger audience.

Sherlock Jr will also showcase a world premiere of a new, semi-improvised score by Guenter A. Buchwald, performed by the European Silent Screen Virtuosi (and members of Bristol Ensemble).

For the first time at a Slapstick gala we're screening what we consider to be a 'double bill' rather than one feature and two shorts, with Chaplin's 40 minute comedy triumph A Dog’s Life (1918) also taking top billing, accompanied by a 15-piece Bristol Ensemble orchestra performing Chaplin’s own score to the film.

Finally, Laurel & Hardy fans will be pleased to hear we'll also be screening their 1929 short Angora Love at the gala, with a live musical accompaniment still to be confirmed.

Also performing at the gala will be innovative and award-winning visual comedy performers The Kagools, who had some of us in stitches when we saw them live last December, and the whole evening will be hosted by a yet to be revealed and very exciting guest host.

All in all, this promises to be our finest and funniest Gala to date, so book early to be sure you are a part of it!

The gala takes place at
Colston Hall on Friday 26th January 2018 at 7.30pm and tickets will be on sale tomorrow (Friday), unless you're a Colston Hall member in which case you can steal a march on everyone else by getting one via their pre-sale programme today. We'd love to know your thoughts about the gala announcement, so be sure to get in touch via our usual social media channels (see buttons at the foot of this newsletter) to tell us what you think.

Meanwhile, we're busily working away on the rest of the programme for Slapstick 2018, full details about which will be revealed as soon as it's finalised - so expect to hear from us again really soon.

Until then, keep on laughing AND see you in January!
