2018 RWA Secret Postcard Auction

12th April 2018

Categories: Latest News

Original artwork by Grayson Perry, Gilbert & George, Antony Gormley, Richard Long, Norman Ackroyd, David Bailey and Axel Scheffler to be sold in this year’s RWA Secret Postcard Auction (17 May 2018).

Now a major event in the national art calendar, the RWA Secret Postcard Auction offers collectors and first-time buyers the chance to purchase unique works of art by leading figures from the art and cultural world, from as little as £40.

After raising an incredible £30,000 last year, this eagerly anticipated event has attracted contributions by world-renowned contemporary artists who are keen to support Bristol’s first art gallery, an independent charity which gets only 2% of its funding from the public purse.

So far, contributing artists include Turner Prize winners Antony Gormley, Grayson Perry, Gilbert & George and Richard Long. Other leading artists include David Bailey, Maggi Hambling and, for the first time, legendary photographer David Bailey and The Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler.

With around 300 postcard-sized pieces on display, there will be plenty for art-lovers to choose from. All works will be exhibited in the RWA from Saturday 5 May – Wednesday 16 May, giving audiences the opportunity to place silent bids in person, by phone or by email. These unique works will be auctioned off via silent bidding on Thursday 2 June. On the night, a selection of works will go under the hammer in an exciting live auction. The auction will be overseen by auctioneer Andrew Morgan from Hollis Morgan Property Auctions.

Bids will start from just £40 but the identities of who did which postcard will remain secret until the auction ends. All proceeds raised by the sale of the cards will go towards supporting the RWA, a self-supporting charity (1070163) which does not receive any regular funding from the government or the crown.

Tickets to the auction are just £10 which includes access to the current exhibition Sawdust and Sequins: The Art of the Circus, and wine and nibbles on arrival. Tickets can be bought online from the RWA website.
