Defibrillator in a Cemetery?

9th August 2018

Categories: Latest News

A cemetery may not be the first location you would expect to find a defibrillator, but that is exactly what has just been installed at pioneering Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol.

Judith Craddock of the Friends of Arnos Vale hands over the new defibrillator

Thanks to a donation from the Friends of Arnos Vale Cemetery, the defibrillator has been installed in the visitor centre and registered with the ambulance service to increase the network within the local area.

The use of a defibrillator, combined with the immediate application of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can significantly increase survival chances following cardiac arrest

Arnos Vale CEO, Mike Coe explains; “We have received many humorous comments about the defibrillator being in the cemetery and whether we are trying to ‘raise the dead’.  As pioneering as we are however, the reality is that due to the ever-increasing number of visitors and a growing number of volunteers aged over 50 on site, we want to ensure that we have the ability to respond rapidly to any incidents that may occur. ”

“We would like to thank the Friends of Arnos Vale Cemetery for funding the defibrillator, something we would not have been able to purchase without their support.”

Arnos Vale Cemetery has a history of breaking the cemetery mould, generating a sustainable revenue source from a range of activities other than traditional cemetery services and also runs one of Bristol’s most popular cafes.

Arnos Vale also hosts weddings in the buildings and woodlands as well as creating an annual schedule of events including outdoor cinema and night tours alongside being a filming location for well-known programmes including Casualty and Sherlock Holmes.

In related news, Destination Bristol also recently installed a defibrilator on the outside wall of our offices at 53 Queen Square, Bristol, BS1 4LH.
