The old barn at Trymwood sits at the side of the Grade 2 listed house in the historic village of Westbury on Trym just 3 miles from the centre of Bristol. The house is reported to be the oldest in the village. The barn was originally part of the farm buildings, later becoming a scullery for the main house, and evidence of the old range and bread oven are still in place as is the meat salting sink. The farm appears to have been involved in milling and cider making and there was quarrying further up the valley.

The Trymwood farm land was dispersed over the years as Bristol grew, although the house still retains a large garden to the rear. The land surrounding the property is now privately owned and Bristol City Council manage Badock Wood which is a local amenity at the head of the valley. The original cottage farmhouse was gentrified with a Georgian façade in the 18th century. Inside much of the cottage character remains.

A recent restoration project was undertaken using compatible materials such as oak, lime and distemper, with lambswool to insulate the buildings where possible. Sustainable principles were followed, retaining original fabric and introducing insulation together with a highly efficient heating system.

The accommodation consists of a large dining/living parlour with a kitchen on the ground floor, a bathroom and 2 bedrooms on the first floor. A cot is available if required.

The stone floored parlour has a dining table, with chairs and a pew/bench, a sofa and occasional chairs. There is also a piano for guests to use.

There is a woodburning stove at one end of the parlour and a nursery fire guard is in place. Wood may be collected from the wood store in the garden. A high chair is available if required. There are plenty of games and puzzles for children of all ages.

The fully fitted kitchen has a gas oven and hob and there is a dishwasher and fridge. The washing machine is located beneath the stairs. There is a freezer and tumble drier if required. Clothes driers are available in the garden for the use of guests.

Beyond the parlour a door leads through a potting shed to the garden. Bicycles can be securely locked away in the potting shed. Guests have free access to the garden and can enjoy games or a meal outside, although ball games are discouraged because of the planting.

There is plenty of lawn space and the garden has perennial borders, mature trees, a large vegetable patch, a chicken house and run, a small orchard, a beehive and greenhouses. A very peaceful haven after a busy day in the city!

Short breaks (up to 3 nights) based on 4 sharing from £600

Weekly rate based on 4 sharing from £1,250. Stays longer than 2 weeks charged at reduced rates. Cleaning charges apply.

50% of the cost of the stay is charged when booking. The remaining 50% becomes due 1 month in advance of the stay. If the booking is cancelled at least one month in advance of the stay, a full refund of the deposit is made.

A returnable good housekeeping deposit of £250 per week will be included in the bill.

The no. 1 bus runs from the centre of the village (a 5 minute walk from the barn) to the centre of Bristol and on to Bristol Temple Meads Railway Station via the new Cabot Circus shopping centre. The buses run every 12 minutes.

A homemade cake, organic milk, butter, coffee and tea are provided upon arrival.

Bedding and towels are provided and the beds are made up to guests requirements.

One bedroom has a 5’ (1.52m) zip and link bed. This can be divided into 2 narrow single beds if required, suitable for children

If you are staying longer and would like the barn cleaned at any time during your stay or require fresh bedding and towels, this can be provided at a cost of £80.

WiFi is available throughout the building. There is a fixed flat screen TV on the wall in the barn.

The barn is provided with recycling boxes with a list of items which can be recycled. Special boxes for vegetable compost and food waste are in the kitchen.

There is a dedicated parking space for 2 cars in front of the garage inside the gates to the property.

Local pubs, cafes and restaurants are available in the village within a very short walking distance. There is a Cooperative supermarket, bread shops, dry cleaners, newsagents, ironmongers as well as several gift shops. Details of many Bristol amenities are provided in the drawer to the sideboard.

Personal belongings are the responsibility of the guests who should provide their own insurance cover under their travel or house contents policies whilst staying at Trymwood.
