    The Matthew Story

The Matthew that you see in Bristol today is a modern reconstruction of the original Matthew that John Cabot sailed to Newfoundland in 1497.

The Matthew 525 Project

To mark 25 years of The Matthew and the 525th anniversary of John Cabot’s voyage across the Atlantic on the original Matthew in 1497, The Matthew of Bristol Trust embarked on a project to further advance the educational aims of the ship and the Trust.

The Matthew 525 Project is now completed and The Trust is absolutely delighted to share with you a fantastic new learning resource and a brand new documentary telling the story of The Matthew from the 1990s to the present day.

Support The Matthew

The Matthew is an expensive ship to maintain and repair – we rely hugely on the generosity of the general public to help us keep it going.

All money raised by The Matthew of Bristol Trust is used to maintain The Matthew so that people can continue to visit it, sail on it and learn about its rich history.

Come and join our Crew!

Do you have an interest in Bristol’s maritime history and want to get involved with one of Bristol’s iconic ships?

Sailing experience is not necessary but you would need to spare us a day (or more!) of your time each week, have a willingness to ‘learn the ropes’, and also enjoy talking to the general public.

If you'd like to join our award-winning team and are available to volunteer on a regular basis, get in touch to find out more.
