About
Hellenge Hill lies on the south-facing scarp of the Mendips and has spectacular views across the Somerset Levels and the Bristol Channel. The grassland of the Hill is calcareous and therefore supports the growth of rare plants which can only be found on the Mendips.
Some of the plants that grow here provide a good habitat for invertebrates and birds, you might even see adders. The site is great if you like nature and stunning views. The best time to visit is from April till August, the nature reserve is open at all times. There are 2 access points, Roman Road and Shiplate Road. Footpaths allow access to a part of the Mendip Way Trail, but the area is very hilly and the paths can become muddy when wet. On the site sheep are grazing and therefore dogs must be kept on lead. There is a parking layby on Roman road which can be used. A car ride from the city centre to Hellenge Hill will be about 45 minutes, whereas public transport can range anywhere from 1 hour and a half up to 2 hours. Entry to this nature reserve is free of charge!
