About

Can art and sculpture capture what it is to be human?

Being Human explores the revolutions of modernist sculpture in Britain – from Epstein and Gaudier-Brzeska at the turn of the century to the postwar 'Geometry of Fear' artists dealing with the aftermath of war.

From the living, desired and desiring body to rage and torment, Being Human examines changing attitudes to beauty, identity, emotions and sexuality and features contemporary work by Yeesookyung, Mary Reid Kelley and Wood and Harrison. They hold a light to contemporary attitudes to humanity and selfhood.

This seminar will explore these themes and focus on the portrayal of the body in modern sculpture, discussing how sculpture is uniquely placed to embody the human form, while problematising the male gaze.

With case studies based on individual artists, this seminar is open to anyone interested in British sculpture in the 20th century.

Tea and coffee will be provided during the break.

Peter Dent, University of Bristol
