Stefan Ciric returns with the penultimate instalment of his Rachmaninov cycle: the Cinderella among Rachmaninov's works, the 4th Piano Concerto is a bittersweet and jazz-influenced work showing the new direction in which Rachmaninov was heading at the end of his life.
Rimsky-Korsakov May Night Overture
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 4 in G minor Op. 40
Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition orch, Ravel
Before and after this rarely-heard work, we hear two of great Rachmaninov's heroes and influences: to open, a sparkling overture depicting the start of Russia's famous 'white nights' and all-night partying from Rimsky-Korsakov. BCP's concert ends with Mussorgsky's intriguing and glorious imagined wander round an art gallery, featuring an ox cart, catacombs, witches, the hut on chicken's legs (!) and – finally and magnificently – the Great Gate of Kiev, with all the bells of the city pealing in triumph.
