DIASPORA!
About
DIASPORA! is a new and first-of-its-kind festival for Bristol and the South West. Developed, produced and presented by the Diverse Artists Network, this inaugural festival will showcase and reflect the wide variety of talent from the region’s underrepresented diasporas. With over 60 events taking place at 30+ venues, DIASPORA! will platform more than 150 artists across one exceptional long weekend!
Developed, produced, and presented by the Diverse Artists Network (DAN), and taking place this year for the very first time, the festival will platform artists from underrepresented cultural backgrounds. Meaning people from, largely, the diasporas of countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Central and South America. (Please note this is not a definitive list of underrepresented cultures or diasporas.)
Events will take place at iconic venues throughout the city including: Bristol Old Vic, Museum of Bath at Work, Bristol Cathedral, Bristol Ferries, Tobacco Factory, The Greenway Centre, The Watershed, RWA, The Plough Inn, The Canteen and ACTA Community Theatre.
The diverse programme includes an opening ceremony on Friday 3 May, at Trinity Centre, to celebrate Bristol’s many cultural communities and their various traditions related to fire. Expect dance, music, poetry, folklore, cross-cultural connections and delicious food from the Jamaican Hideaway.
Trinity Centre will also host Alkebulan - African Storytelling Village. An epic day of all kinds of events from Africa’s many diasporas, from storytelling to dancing, hair wrapping to face painting, singing, DJs and, of course, food.
Bristol Beacon has programmed Orchestra Baobab, a legendary nine-piece group from Senegal celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2024; and Orchestral Qawwali Project, a one-of-a-kind ensemble who breathe new life into centuries-old traditions through a soul-soothing blend of Sufi, choral and Indian classical music.
