About

Joining the RSPB at Ham Wall on 12th May 2024 from 9 am to 1 pm for an enlightening experience for those curious about unlocking the video potential of their DSLR or Mirrorless camera. Delve into the world of filming under the guidance of Steve Jennings, a former BBC & ITV television journalist/cameraman, in this first-steps, hands-on guide.

Ever pondered over the purpose of that little red movie button on your digital camera? Or perhaps felt intimidated by the video functions, viewing them as an enigmatic addition to your photographic arsenal? Many share this sentiment, opting for the comfort of capturing stills over venturing into the realm of motion. However, modern cameras boast high-quality video formats, beckoning enthusiasts to explore their capabilities and seize the opportunity to immortalize life in motion.

This session will demystify the fundamentals of filming, offering a gentle initiation devoid of overwhelming technical jargon. Participants will be guided through setting up their cameras for video, exploring the variety of formats available, understanding lens selection, mastering composition and framing techniques, and gaining proficiency with tripods. While the focus remains on the essentials, a brief overview of filming for editing will also be provided.

Indeed, the world of video production extends far beyond these introductory concepts, encompassing topics such as audio recording, sound design, and advanced editing techniques. However, this workshop serves as a springboard into the captivating realm of cinematography, inviting attendees to dip their toes into the waters of video production.

So why not seize the opportunity to embark on this cinematic journey, learning how to wield your camera to encapsulate the essence of life on the move? Join them for a morning of exploration, experimentation, and, most importantly, enjoyment amidst the natural splendor of RSPB Ham Wall.
