Walks with Wardens – International Dawn Chorus Day at RSPB Ham Wall
About
Join RSPB Ham Wall just before International Dawn Chorus Day for a 3-hour tour to celebrate nature's symphony and discover the delights of spring with the wardening team. With exclusive access to parts of the reserve normally closed to visitors, participants will absorb the sounds of the reedbed spring, find the wildlife hidden within, and learn more about the varied reserve management work that goes on behind the scenes. They'll be listening out for the evocative boom of the male bittern, the explosive song of Cetti's warblers, and trilling sedge warblers, as well as enjoying the songs of typical woodland birds such as robins, great tits, and blackbirds.
RSPB Ham Wall is a special place teeming with amazing wildlife, panoramic views, and the sound of the reeds swaying in the wind all year round. Not only that, but the Avalon Marshes are one of, if not the best place in the country to see bitterns, with approximately one-fifth of the UK's population of booming males recorded here in 2022. Bitterns are just one of the five heron species you might see in a day at Ham Wall – great white egrets are now a regular fixture, cattle egrets bred here in 2017 (the first time on an RSPB reserve), grey herons nest in the reeds, and little egrets can be seen fishing around the edges.
As well as the chance to see some of the fantastic wildlife that Ham Wall has to offer, participants will also learn about the work the staff and volunteer team undertake managing, surveying, and protecting this special landscape. This is an opportunity to go behind the scenes to areas not normally accessible to visitors. All of this makes for an unmissable experience, so why not book a place on this exclusive tour (numbers are limited) to join the wardening team today?
