From freshly prepared Vietnamese fare to Bristol’s foremost jazz bar, The Vegetable Diva’s founder Sonya Devi-Clarke reveals her go-to places for good food and drink this #FoodFriday.

The Vegetable Diva is one of the restaurants and cafés on this month’s Dal Trail for the British Dal Festival, a nationwide celebration of the most versatile of ingredients. Pop in from 21 to 31 March to taste a special pulse dish created for the festival by Sonya and her team.

The Milk Thistle

I am rather partial to a delicious cocktail made by a professional mixologist and The Milk Thistle hits the spot for me. I love the interior, the staff have character and the atmosphere and cocktails are creative without any gimmicks.

Chai Shai

For Indian cuisine simply produced by a family run kitchen, try Chai Shai. It’s a real hidden gem and home-from-home place – one of the few authentic Indian restaurants in Bristol. Reasonably priced with a lovely atmosphere and delicious chapatis.

The Viet Kitchen

After returning from Hanoi I fell in love with Vietnamese food and this comes the closest to the real thing. Delicious food that’s freshly prepared using authentic ingredients and service with a smile. It doesn’t pretend to be anything else.

The Old Duke

I love the jazz and love the atmosphere at The Old Duke. A great pub to enjoy drinks with fabulous jazz bands every night and an eclectic crowd.

After working for ten years as a branding consultant in London, Sonya retrained as a public heath nutritionist after gaining her MSc in Public Health in Bristol she embarked on setting up community teaching kitchens in the South West. Her love of food and expressing her creativity through food led to the creation of The Vegetable Diva in March 2019 a package free cafe and vegetarian zero-waste catering company. The produce for this is supplied by The Diva Fields, a four acre bio-dynamic veg plot in Somerset, thus closing the loop.
