The most hungrily awaited day of the year is almost here. Pancake Day, aka Shrove Tuesday, falls on Tuesday 25 February and we’re lucky to have stacks of places in Bristol where you can fill up on pancakes.

If you don’t fancy faffing around with the frying pan and whisk at home this year, get yourself to one of these restaurants instead.

Buttermilk and Maple at Mercure Bristol Brigstow Hotel

The clue is in the name – Buttermilk and Maple are known for whipping up a mean stack of buttermilk pancakes. And for one day only, they are offering their delightful signature dish at the flippin’ great price of £1 per pancake and £1 per topping.

Harvey Nichols Second Floor Restaurant & Bar

If American-style pancakes are your jam, then the Second Floor Restaurant at Harvey Nichols in Cabot Circus is the place to be. For £12.50 between 20-25 February, indulge in all-you-can-eat American pancakes decked in toppings like ginger and maple custard, fresh berries, honeycomb and roasted pecans.

Make it an even sweeter deal by adding £1 to your pancake order to support StreetSmart, a charity fundraising for the homeless with help from top restaurants across the UK.

Bill’s Restaurants

Bill’s has pulled out all the stops with a dedicated Pancake Menu (available 21 February to 1 March) that will see you through from breakfast to dinnertime. Classic lemon and sugar, decadent caramelised banana and salted caramel sauce, and roast tomato and black olive are some of the toppings on offer. They’ve got two options for kids too, should you be after a family-friendly pancake fix.

On Aqua’s brunch menu you can find heavenly homemade pancakes, served with blueberries, strawberries mascarpone and maple syrup. Perfectly paired with one of their brunch cocktails, seek them out in one of their two Bristol locations – Welsh Back and Clifton – or over in Portishead.

Mud Dock Cycleworks and Cafe

Pay a visit to Mud Dock on the Harbourside for hearty, freshly made buttermilk pancakes, available on their breakfast menu. There are four toppings to tempt you in for a stack: streaky bacon and golden syrup; berry compote, Greek yoghurt and golden syrup; braised apple and salted caramel, and Nutella, banana and hazelnut. Gluten-free diners will be pleased to hear you can tuck into pancakes without gluten here, for an extra 50p.

The Coconut Tree

Expand your pancake horizons beyond the usual crêpes or American-style pancakes by ordering a hopper at The Coconut Tree in Clifton or on Gloucester Road. This Sri Lankan dish is a bowl-shaped coconut milk pancake served with coconut sambal, seeni sambal (caramelised onion with a hint of cinnamon) and Luna Miris (Sri Lankan salsa).

Thali Restaurant

Another alternative for Pancake Day is an uttapam. The Thali Restaurant in both Easton and Montpelier serve these South Indian rice breads, which are a kind of thick dosa, covered in a delicious mix of fresh herbs, coconut, onion and tomato.

And here are a few final suggestions of places to pig out on Pancake Day!

  • Ironworks – Pick from a 3 or 6 stack of pancakes (the latter comes with a big portion warning on the menu!) at this city centre café.
  • Boston Tea Party – With six cafés around Bristol, you won’t ever be far from Boston Tea Party’s dreamy American pancakes.
  • At The Well – The only place where you can tuck into some epic pancakes while you put a wash on! At The Well is a renowned café-launderette on Cheltenham Road.
  • Cosy Club – Enjoy buttermilk pancakes for £1.25 each, plus as many 50p or £1 toppings as you like, inside the beautiful former bank building at Cosy Club on Corn Street.
  • Chez Marcel – Match savoury galettes and sweet crêpes with artisanal Breton cider, French wines or coffee at this authentic crêperie.
