Destination Bristol's role has developed over more than sixteen years from local public/private sector tourism partnership to high-profile, stakeholder-driven agency.

We promote the interests and development of the visitor economy, and working in close collaboration with stakeholders to develop and enhance the city centre. Destination Bristol has a first-class track record of delivering projects on behalf of third-party agencies and supporting the emergence of other partnerships by applying its extensive understanding of successful collaborative working, and its experience in delivering client-focussed projects.  

It is a company limited by guarantee and as such has no shareholders. The company is technically a local authority-controlled company, and has two members, Bristol City Council which has directors on the Board, and Business West, which has one.  The company operates on a not for profit basis ensuring all money earned is reinvested to do more to support business development and marketing.

Destination Bristol offers a business membership programme through its brands Visit Bristol and Meet Bristol, open to those organisations wishing to support the work of the company and rewards this support through a series of specially designed benefits.  These include marketing opportunities, business support, access to business intelligence and opportunities to generate business. The membership programme is particularly suited to those operating within the tourism, hospitality, leisure and retail sectors.

Company History

The company was incorporated in February 1999 and began trading on 1st April 1999 as the Bristol Tourism and Conference Bureau with the aim of promoting Bristol as a business and leisure travel destination.  Shortly after, the company’s brief grew to cover the South Gloucestershire area. In 2000, the company conceived and developed the Tourism Skills Network, a project designed to build the capacity of the industry by improving the skills levels of its workforce. In 2001, the company was asked to expand this initiative to a regional level and until recently retained the right to deliver the programme on behalf of the South West RDA. This was later incorporated into South West Tourism and sadly closed with the end of the regional tourist board in 2011.

The company changed its constitution at its AGM in 2004, adopting the name of Destination Bristol and expanding its Board of Directors.  

In 2006, following the reform of the regional tourist board, Destination Bristol was formally recognised as the ‘Destination Management Organisation’ or 'DMO' for Bristol and South Gloucestershire, one of nine such ‘DMOs’ covering the whole south west region.

Although officially representative of Bristol and South Gloucestershire, Destination Bristol also supports its members located in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, North Somerset, Somerset and Bath and North East Somerset. The company works hard to establish strong partnerships particularly with other DMOs, VisitBritain and VisitEngland.  It also develops strong partnerships with inbound operators, airlines and other travel companies.

In 2008, a development ‘roadmap’ for Destination Bristol was agreed which led to its amalgamation with Broadmead Board, and the inclusion within its brief of delivering improved partnership working on Harbourside.

It now operates four discrete but inter-related business units:

  • The DMO (Destination Management Organisation) under the brands Visit Bristol and Meet Bristol and including the Tourist Information Centre.
  • The Broadmead BID Team
  • The City Centre BID Team
  • The Redcliffe and Temple BID Team
